ART & Design

Click here to view the 2014 Jersey Curriculum for Art & Design. For an overview and explanation please view the Parents' Guide to the 2014 Jersey Curriculum on our main curriculum page.

Art is taught both as a subject in its own right and also as a means of exploring and representing other areas of the curriculum.  As you walk around the school, it will be clear to you that both children and staff highly enjoy and value this subject.

In our teaching, we aim to develop children’s natural creativity and skills, working from a variety of starting points.  These include: working from their imagination; first-hand experiences and close observation; and also through the exploration of different media and the work of other artists.

From Nursery to Year 6 we encourage children to express and represent their ideas, feelings and observations with confidence.  They have opportunities to work not only with drawing and painting media but also to explore processes and techniques relating to printing, textiles and 3D work.

Children are encouraged to make choices about the media and tools that they use for a task. To help them with this, they each have an ideas book in which they explore, collect and record ideas that will inform their work.

Jersey Art Curriculum

The Jersey curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

What does Art look like at Grouville?

Key Stage 1
Children …
  • use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  • use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key Stage 2
Children are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Children ….
  • create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • Learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Community Art Projects

Grouville school actively takes part in a number of community art projects. Over the past year, the children of Grouville school have taken part in the following projects.
The Face of Liberation: As part of the official celebrations of Liberation 75, ArtHouse Jersey commissioned The People’s Picture to create one of the most ambitious pieces of participatory art Jersey has seen. The 'Face of Liberation' photo mosaic covers over 1,000 square feet of wall space outside Liberation Bus Station and features 6,070 faces of Jersey residents from the past and present. The individual faces form an image of Barbara Joan Jouanny (née L'Amy), who was 11 at the time of The Occupation and 17 on Liberation Day.

Skipton Forget Me Knots 2020: A large scale community project that employs creativity to help young people process and navigate their emotional journey during COVID19.
The project has been designed by art therapist and teacher Jacque Rutter and was facilitated by local artists. Culminating in a breath-taking centralised installation made up of thousands of flowers the final installation will be overseen by a leading international artist, who will be announced in due course.
The Skipton Big Ideas exhibition:  A large scale, experiential and interactive exhibition in Jersey’s St Helier Town Church. The aim of this project was to explore the themes of Accessibility, Repurposing and Sense of Place, inviting local and International artists to create installations addressing these themes.

How can I support my child with art?

1. Get messy!
Try to get hold of as many different types of drawing and painting resources as you can to let your child get creative and explore creating art using different materials. Paints, chalk, crayons, pens, pencils, modelling clay and much more can be found in discount shops. Just don’t forget to put lots of newspaper down first!

2. Use household objects creatively
Alternatively, instead of buying materials, let them get creative using things around the house – for example, pasta and pulses to create pictures using glue. You could even experiment with colour-changing art.

3. Keep a sketch book
Encourage your child to keep a sketch book. Suggest that they take it with them when they go out so that they can look for things to sketch – a tree, a building, a scene. Alternatively, if they see something they would like to draw, take a photo on your phone and let them sketch from it when they are home.

4. Celebrate your child's art
Praise your child’s creations and encourage them not to get disheartened if they feel they have made ‘mistakes’. Explain that art is about being creative and trying out different things. There is no right or wrong way to do things. You could even ‘frame’ their work using coloured paper or card and create a little gallery on the kitchen wall or in their bedroom to display their work.

5. Discuss and enjoy art together
Find out about local art galleries or museums that you can visit with your child. Encourage them to talk about what they see and to share their opinions – about subject matter, colours, what materials the artist used, and so on.
